La comisión especial de Naciones Unidas que está investigando las posibles violaciones de los derechos humanos cometidas en Siria reveló este domingo que “hay fuertes sospechas” de que los opositores han usado gas sarín, según indicó la miembro de la comisión especial, Carla del Ponte. Del Ponte aclaró que, de acuerdo con este informe, el gas sarín “ha sido usado por la oposición, no por las autoridades gubernamentales”. Del Ponte señaló, en una entrevista concedida a un medio de comunicación suizo-italiano, que el grupo de expertos de la ONU no ha documentado el uso de armas químicas por parte del Gobierno de Bashar al Assad.
La polémica sobre el uso de armas químicas en Siria comenzó el pasado mes de marzo, cuando el Gobierno y la oposición armada se acusaron mutuamente de haber atacado con armas químicas la localidad de Jan al Assal, en Aleppo, que habría causado al menos 26 muertos, incluidos diez civiles y 16 militares.
En respuesta a estas acusaciones, el Gobierno de Al Assad ha negado el uso de armas químicas y ha acusado a Occidente de conspirar contra Siria y de fabricar asuntos para presionar a su Gobierno, además de armar y financiar a los grupos opositores.

El pasado 24 de marzo fuentes de la Administración estadounidense reconocieron que la CIA ya se encuentra en territorio sirio intensificando sus operaciones para apoyar a los grupos opositores armados que buscan derrocar al Gobierno de Bashar al Assad. De esta manera, la CIA está expandiendo su rol en la guerra en Siria y ahonda en el apoyo que Estados Unidos brinda a la oposición siria, que incluye campos de entrenamiento en el uso de armamento y contraespionaje.
La información de inteligencia que suministra a los opositores sirios la recogen a través de los satélites y sistemas vigilancia de Estados Unidos focalizados en los movimientos de las tropas terrestres y aéreas sirias, según las fuentes citadas por el Wall Street Journal, en estrecha colaboración con las agencias de Inteligencia de Israel y Jordania.
